Scapa clean up

On Wed 28th we became part of Glaitness S Team and went to Scapa beach to help clear marine litter with P7.
We learned how important it is to pick up even small pieces of plastic that can be ingested by birds and marine creatures. Plastic is not bio degradable - it will be around forever and just break into smaller pieces.
We filled over 20 bags of rubbish!

Even small bits count!

Some big bits were hard to pull up!
There were other interesting finds.
It is good to feel that we made a difference.
A good job well done!

Recycled goods

For a homework task the class were asked to create a useful item from something that would normally be thrown away.
We ended up with a variety of useful and clever items! Many thanks for the support at home and it is great to see how imaginative and resourceful people can be!
Our goods on display

A range of draught excluders!

Some desk tidies!
This one even includes magnets
for holding metal paper clips etc.

Tie dye

We decided that our comfy chairs were in need of a makeover so Mrs Thompson and Mrs Muir scoured the charity shops for material that we could tie dye and use for covers. They found some cotton curtains that were ideal for the job.
We used marbles and elastic bands to make the tie dye patterns on the cloth. It was quite hard to wind the bands round tight enough!
The next task was mixing the dye with water and salt and leaving it to soak overnight.
and rinsed out the next day.

Then it was hung out to dry before we had the hard task of removing the bands and marbles!

We couldn't resist hiding under it when we finished!
Our last job was ironing the cloth before we gave it Mrs Muir to sew into covers.

Murder mystery!

Last week we got a shock when we arrived at school to discover the classroom sealed off as a crime scene! A 'body' lay on the floor and we had to become crime scene investigators to find out who had done such a terrible deed! We knew it was one of us - but who?
Here are some of our slideshows of the event.

Newsflash!

Well done Craig! 19 on the leaderboard!

RRR

The next part of our topic will be looking at how we can reduce, reuse and recycle in order to help improve our environment. Have you ever wondered what happens to our waste when it is sent for recycling?
Watch these videos to give you an idea of where our cans, bottles etc go.

Top Trumps Tournament

We love to play Top Trumps in p5 and have several sets of cards in the classroom. We ordered a special Olympic edition of the game which has six special Olympic packs and a national Top trumps tournament competition which we registered for.
We completed our class tournament and Craig was declared champion!
He now has to compete online with other champions all over UK.
The 12 competitors with the highest scores when the online elimination round ends on 31st March will then go to London to compete in the Grand Final.
The winner will be crowned Top Trumps champion and will get to have a wonderful rowing experience with Sir Steve Redgrave, the 5 times gold medal winner, and ambassador for 2012 Top Trumps Tournament.
Craig has started his online game. Here he is concentrating hard on his cards.
We watched on the Smartboard and gave him lots of encouragement!

When I wrote this blog entry he was sitting at number 27 on the leader board!
Best of luck Craig! (but please don't spend all your time on the computer!)

World Book Day

Some of us wanted to do a secret book swap again this year so Ella and Kasey decorated a swap box for us. We wrapped our books and put a describing word on the front to give a clue about what type of book it was.

Everyone seemed happy with their books.

We went to the library to share our favourite books and authors with each other and Mrs McRae shared the books she used to read as a child. Iona knew a lot of the stories in the Hans Christian Anderson book!
The Rupert books have instructions for making things and Ella thought it might be fun to try some of them even though it was a bit old fashioned!

We all love reading and spending time in the library.
